September:
You Can Only Control So Much…
You've prepared your pack, de-scented your gear, scouted
the land and covered your tracks, but meanwhile your
neighbor throws garbage in his woods, shoots anything
that walks and leaves sent everywhere. What to do? It’s
simple, but easier said than done; stay positive and make
the best of what you've got. Try to focus on the things
that you CAN control rather than the things that you have
no control over. For instance, while you have no control
over what the people on your neighboring properties will
be shooting, you have complete control over your own QDM
program and nutrition.
Age, nutrition and genetics are the “Big Three” in terms
of producing trophy whitetails. The bottom line is, make
your property better. You absolutely need to make it
more desirable for quality deer to be on your property
rather than someone else’s. Plant food plots and provide
lots of minerals not only during the growing season, but
throughout the year as well. Trophy Rock is an
outstanding mineral supplement that deer love and it
gives bucks the necessary minerals to get the maximum
potential out of their antlers. Also think about
providing cover for your deer so that they feel safe in
their environment. While Japanese honeysuckle may be
considered an invasive plant, for hunters it’s the
perfect tool. It's cheap to plant, grows like crazy and
provides thick cover that the big bucks love. Lastly,
when scouting, try your best to remain scent free. Wear
rubber boots and as you walk don't grab branches and
saplings. Leave as little scent in the woods as
possible.
So stop focusing on the negative and become proactive in
making your property a more desirable environment for the
deer and watch the Big Bucks come in.
Have a great season!
